This is one power readily available with unlimited opportunity. It possesses vast human reserves for sustainability and is renewable when lost by intentional act or unconscious omission. But this power of unity can only become effective when fueled by a purpose-driven synergy of all who take part of it.
After 15 years of existence of the foundation, I have seen the importance of unity in the implementation of all our development programs around Mt. Apo. Resources are stretched to the maximum when unity of intentions is established and there is growing understanding of co-ownership when people starts pooling talents and skills for a common direction.
Our footbridge linking the 2 barangays in Kinarum and Manobo in Magpet was a classic example of the power of unity. Believing on the project’s intention, partner officials from the government joined the project implementation and shared the responsibility of project completion. The footbridge attracted commitment and dedication from people involved. The roads leading to the project site was attended to, the local builders found a sense of public service and faith was renewed among the local residents.
The MAFI Assisted Secondary School Association (MAFI-ASSA) is another example of unity at work. MAFI-ASSA is composed of principals, barangay chairmen, parents and students within the area covered by the high school financial assistance project of the foundation. With the talents and wisdom of the school principals and teachers and the experiences of the parents, students and barangay leaders, the association has established solid core values of efficiency, creative interaction and integrity in project operations.
Recently the mayors of Kidapawan City and the municipalities of Magpet and Makilala have inked a declaration of understanding for the protection, preservation and development of Mt. Apo Natural Park in Cotabato province. The unifying spirit of their understanding towards a common purpose sets a model of how the power of unity can transcend territorial boundaries and political differences.
Yes, there is unseen strength in bonding together as one. But the true lasting strength of unity lies in the fact that when people, institutions, systems and values come together for a common purpose, a powerful consensus is built where the group’s idea, decision, direction and goal becomes the responsibility of each and everyone..
When the defining moment of consensus is reached, the momentum for concrete actions becomes unstoppable for anybody can lead to reach the objective. This is the true liberating power of unity.
