3 LGU leaders pool rice subsidies for MAFI scholars
Governor Emmylou “Lala” Taliño- Mendoza of Cotabato Province, Vice Mayor Joseph A. Evangelista of Kidapawan City and Mayor Rudy S. Caoagdan of Makilala have collaborated in assisting MAFI in the implementation of Collegiate Degree and Technical Vocational scholarship project thru rice assistance for the poor scholars of MAFI
The three (3) leaders have committed to provide one (1) sack of rice each every month to augment the limited food allowance given to the scholars of MAFI. The 3 sacks of rice, from Governor Mendoza, Vice Mayor Evangelista and Mayor Caoagdan, will be distributed to the MAFI scholars for food consumption during their stay at MAFI’s dormitory.
The rice assistance for the scholars materialized after MAFI Executive Director, Atty. Ermelo N. Libre, made representations to the 3 LGU leaders for possible rice assistance for the MAFI scholars. Atty Libre have observed that the food allowance given by MAFI is not enough with the rising food prices. Parents of the scholars are supposed to supplement the other food requirements of the scholars. But due to poverty, food supplements are not coming regularly.
The current food allowance provided by MAFI to its scholar is P1,050 per month computed at P13.46 per meal for the 26 school days every month. This amount has increased only twice from the original P600 per month since the scholarship project of MAFI started in 1995. Much as the foundation wants, the food allowance for the scholars cannot yet be increased due to the limited fund source of the foundation. Any increase will mean reduction of the other projects currently implemented by MAFI.
With the rice assistance, the scholars can now stretch their limited monthly food allowance and use portions of it for extra food items or other school needs. The free rice in every meal of the scholar that can be stretch out from the 3 sacks of rice assistance given monthly is surely a big help for the poor scholars of MAFI. An average of 3.5 kilos per scholar per month for the 42 existing scholars this year will benefit from this act of kindness from the 3 LGU leaders.
