MTP- Phase I undergo 3rd stage maintenance
The third maintenance activity of 2.5- hectare Maag Tinikaran Project (MTP–I) in the slopes of south-west portion of Mt. Apo peak Cotabato side was made last September 29 to October 2, 2011. MTP-1 area was planted with tinikaran seedlings last November 24, 2009 by ___ volunteers as part of MAFI’s environmental advocacy.
"MTP’s project maintenance phase includes: 1. round weeding, 2.physical inventory of planted seedlings, and 3. replanting. The 3rd maintenance of MTP-1 was conducted by a group of Mt. Apo High School students led by Mr. Randy Altamero. The 15 members of the maintenance crew from Mt. Apo High School are knowledgeable of the maintenance activities and are familiar with the terrain of the area.
MTP project manager, Edgar Aquiatan together with 3 MAFI college scholars joined the activity and supervised the 3-day maintenance job.
The maintenance activity was funded jointly MAFI and Cotabato Government Employees Association (COTGEM), a project partner who committed financial support for the maintenance of MTP-1. The cost of the maintenance work was P12,250.00, including logistical support services for the 3-day activity.
Per latest monitoring of the 2.5 has. MTP-1 project, 5,214 Tinikaran plants are growing averaging 1.5 to 2 feet in height. An additional 45 hills were planted in the area. Statistics showed that there is minimal mortality rate as compared to the 5,179 growing plants recorded during the 2nd maintenance work made last November 10 to 13, 2010.
Presently, MAFI is preparing for another 3rd stage maintenance activity of MTP-2 scheduled on November 16 to 19, 2011. A portion of MTP-2 project was adopted by MAFI-ASSA, the 22-member association of high schools under MAFI’s high school financial assistance project.
