Officials of schools benefited by the Foundation’s High School Financial Assistance Project (HSFAP) and Barangay Health Workers (BHWs) of barangays where these schools are located on August 29, 2008 underwent a seminar on “Guides on Proper Medicine Prescription and Preparation at the MAFI Function Room. The seminar was conducted in response to the request of school administrators and barangay chairmen for some knowledge in prescribing medicines and dispensing the right medicines for specific ailments that are common in school and in the barangays.
Three resource persons took turns is tackling important health-related topics such as: a] correct dosage for different age ranges; b] expiration date of medicines; c] administering only first aid and not giving antibiotics unless prescribed by a physician; d] the importance of having Oral Rehydration Solution in the schools; e] the proper interval of medicine intake; and f] going to the doctor if a fever persists for three days. It was also recommended that students and barangay residents be advised to take Vitamin C to increase resistance to diseases and to take medicines on a full stomach, meaning after a meal.
The seminar participants were advised against using alcohol when applying Tepid Water Sponge Bath to persons with fever as this tends to close skin pores and trap heat inside the body. Also for common colds and cough, children below 10 years old, must be given syrup, while 10-11 years old can be given 250mg. tablets or capsules and above 12 years old, 500mg. tablets or capsules. As to abdominal pains, the participants were told that these have different causes such as: gas, obstruction and intestinal worms. The proper treatment of open wounds was also tackled as well as the treatment for female individuals who suffer from dysmenorrhea. The participants were also told that in case of epileptic attacks, the rule is to never touch the person but to help him to lie sideways on the floor and loosen his clothing as touching can trigger another attack and that there is no specific medicines to cure it. It was explained that epilepsy is caused by the continuous irritation of brain cells.
Present during the seminar were officials from the following MAFI-ASSA member-schools: Buenavida High School; New Israel High School; Kisante High School; Ricardo Ipong Memorial National High School; Todaya High School and Kapatagan High School. In attendance also were BHW’s the following barangays: New Israel; Kisante; Batasan; Old Bulatukan; Sibawab; Buenavida; Indangan; Tagbac; and Pangao-an.
Mr. Zaldy Bornea, president of the MAFI-ASSA, expressed his gratitude to the Energy Development Corporation (EDC), the new owner of the Mindanao Geothermal Production Field (MGPF) at Ilomavis, Kidapawan City, for sponsoring the seminar, the resource persons and the participants for attending. Mr. Raymundo Onggona, Community Relations Officer of MGPF, likewise, thanked the resource paersons and encouraged the participants to put into practice what they learned from the seminar.
