The Mount Apo Foundation, Inc. (MAFI) on October 2, 2008 turned over to the Sangguniang Barangay (SB) of Pangao-an, Magpet the completed one-classroom Day Care Center Building during the turn over ceremony at the Barangay Proper. The project was turned over for and in behalf of the Foundation by Atty. Ermelo N. Libre, MAFI Executive Director and was accepted by Hon. HermanaTalotalo, barangay chairman.
Atty. Libre, in his speech, stressed that the building should be treated as a vehicle for the educational development of all pre-school age children in the area and that the barangay officials, the parents and the day care worker should see to it that the center serves its purpose of developing good citizens in the future.
Barangay Chairman Talotalo, in her acceptance speech, recounted how challenged the barangay officials were seeing that the building temporarily used to hold day care classes cannot comfortably accommodate the more than 40 pupils. Day care classes were conducted in two (2) shifts just so the day care pupils can be accommodated.
The proposed Day Care Center was started in 1998 through funds from the 2nd Congressional District Office, out of which only the concrete beams and columns, and GI roof were completed. It has been left untouched since then, for 10 years.
This desire to have the building finished prompted them to seek assistance from MAFI. They were advised that since MAFI funds are limited, approval of the project will be assured if the barangay can provide a counterpart. Thus, the SB allotted about P18,000.00, to serve as their counterpart. The SB members also requested the Municipal Government for material support and it committed to a maximum of P50,000.00. Armed with these commitments, the SB returned to MAFI and as the saying goes, “the rest is history.”
Chairman Talotalo related the many difficulties they had to hurdle but she said she was glad that all their efforts bore fruit. She said the day care pupils can now benefit from a conducive and comfortable venue. She, however, asked the parents to help in whatever is needed to keep the center in order and properly maintained.
For and in behalf of the community, the barangay chairman expressed gratitude to all those who helped in the realization of this project: the Sanguniang Barangay for their all-out support; the Magpet local government unit, headed by Mayor Efren Piñol, for the counterpart it provided and lastly to MAFI who shouldered most of the costs.
