Finding his purpose and meaning in MAFI

Atty. Ermelo N. Libre

Frustrated with his previous work in government, Atty. Ermelo Libre left it in the late ‘90s and eventually joined MAFI.

“When I got on board, I formulated and implemented policies and operations manual. I also established a scorecard to guide MAFI in objectively screening scholarship applicants. The reforms were initially opposed by some CTCCDI members. But in the end, through proper dialogues, we overcame the challenge. Ultimately, they realized the importance of the reforms,” Atty. Libre recounted.

“MAFI had birth pains at the start. It didn’t have a building then. Nonetheless, PNOC officials were sincere as they walked the talk. We knew we were working for a noble cause. We were on a mission, working to change the lives of upland dwellers in Mt. Apo. Personally, I believe that when something is good for the heart, it is good for the soul. That is why I stayed long in MAFI because I felt I was doing something that would have lasting and meaningful impact on people’s lives,” he said.

“MAFI served as my ‘laboratory’ to deliver genuine and meaning public service, which was my frustration while in government. With sincere intentions and purpose, I realized that we could overcome obstacles, address misunderstanding and misconceptions, implement significant reforms, deliver results, and make a difference,” he said, adding that his community work had changed his world view, made him rediscover his purpose, and solidified his values.

During his time, MAFI endorsed the closure of Mt. Apo for rehabilitation. The closure was amplified by the media, thereby increasing public awareness on the need to protect it.

He also organized a learning visit for mayors from Kidapawan, Makilala, and Magpet to the Yosemite National Park in the US so they could learn from its model and apply it in protecting Mt. Apo.

The humble former MAFI head has learned to be detached from his titles. “Titles are just titles. My work in MAFI had been my learning stage for a bigger role in life. What matters most is you are able to help others,” he reflected.
