MAFI STORIES

The scholar who undauntedly persevered to attain her dreams

Girly Q. Lopez-Elman

Girly Elman had been a working student from elementary to high school. In 2007, she learned about MAFI’s scholarship program and applied for it—even though she heard that it would be difficult for non-Lumads like her to qualify. Undauntedly, she persevered, and in the end, passed the scholarship exam.

“I studied computer science at the University of Southern Mindanao. While on scholarship, MAFI allowed us to work at the Energy Development Corporation (EDC) to do inventory of bananas in the farm. I realized that it was not easy to earn money, thus motivating me to study even harder,” Girly recounted.

“MAFI taught me how to budget my allowance. To augment it, I took on extra jobs during my free time. I washed laundry for other people and also worked part-time in an Internet café,” said Girlie, who is now working at EDC where she handles the company’s scholarship program and facilitates releasing of funds to MAFI.

“Through its constant motivational seminars, MAFI had helped me develop my personality and to have a positive outlook in life. I recall that it brought us before to Samal Island. It was my first time there, and I was so stirred that I told myself I would come back to the island someday at my own expense. It was a simple experience, yet it inspired me to work hard to attain my dreams,” Girly shared.

After graduation, Girly has been actively involved in MAFI’s alumni program, contributing an electric fan for use by dormers and convincing others to give back to the foundation.

“I have learned to take advantage of every opportunity, focus on my goals, and value personal sacrifices. If you have an aspiration, you should be determined to attain it. Of course, we should remember and apply all the good advices given to us, thank those who have helped us, and most importantly, to always pray for Divine guidance for everything that we do,” she elaborated.
